Server rack diagram template

A rack diagram shows exactly what sits in each unit of a server rack, so anyone working on it knows what they are touching. This example lays out a 42U rack with network equipment at the top, servers and storage in the middle, spare space for growth and UPS units at the bottom, with a table of power draw and network connections.

How to use this template

  1. List what is in the rack

Record each device with its height in U, its power draw and its network connections. Check the real rack, not an old spreadsheet.

  2. Place by weight and heat

Put heavy UPS units and storage low and network kit near the top where cables run. Leave space for growth in one block.

  3. Check the power budget

Add up the power draw and compare it with what the PDUs and UPS can supply, keeping headroom for start-up spikes.
