Civil litigation process template

A civil claim follows a long road from the first dispute to judgment, and most cases leave it early by settling. This board draws the road in three rows: pre-action, case management and trial. Each of the fifteen stops shows a typical time limit, green exits show where cases commonly settle, and boxes on the right give a rough idea of spend by the end of each row.

This is a planning example, not legal advice. Check your own policies, advisers and the local rules that apply to you.

How to use this template

  1. Walk the road with the client

Use the board to explain what happens next and how long it usually takes. It helps set expectations early.

  2. Mark the exits

Show where settlement is realistic, such as after the letter before claim or at mediation, and what an offer could look like.

  3. Track spend and time

Update the spend boxes as the case moves on, so decisions about settling are made with the real costs in view.
