Volunteer onboarding path template

Charities often lose more volunteers during onboarding than after they start. This board follows 120 enquiries along a path of ten steps, from the first enquiry through the application, chat, references, background check, induction and training to the first solo shift and a 3-month check-in. Each step shows how many people are left and the average day, red tags show who dropped away, and a chart gives the reasons.

How to use this template

  1. Lay out the path

List every step a volunteer goes through, in order, from first contact to being settled in the role.

  2. Count who is left

Use last year's records to note how many people reach each step and how long it takes them.

  3. Fix the biggest drop

Find the largest red tag and ask why people leave there. Speed and a personal reply usually matter more than paperwork.
