Nonprofit ecosystem map template

An ecosystem map shows everyone around your charity and how close each relationship really is. This example puts an older people's befriending charity at the centre, with core partners in the inner ring, regular collaborators in the middle and wider influences outside. Each organisation is coloured by sector, from funders and public bodies to community groups, peers, businesses and media, with notes on the gaps to work on.

How to use this template

  1. List every relationship

Brainstorm funders, referrers, partners, peers, businesses, media and community groups. Aim for breadth before sorting.

  2. Place them by closeness

Put each one in the ring that matches how often you actually work together, not how often you would like to.

  3. Look for gaps

Notice empty slices, one-way relationships and important bodies sitting in the outer ring, then pick two to strengthen.
