Theory of change template

A theory of change explains how and why your work leads to the change you want to see. This example maps a youth housing charity from four activities, through early and intermediate outcomes, to long-term outcomes and a single goal. A red ceiling of accountability separates the results the charity answers for from the ones it only contributes to, and numbered dots show where an assumption has to hold.

How to use this template

  1. Start with the goal

Write the long-term change at the top in plain words, then work down by asking what has to be true first for it to happen.

  2. Fill in the outcomes

Add long-term, intermediate and early outcomes as layers, and draw arrows only where one really leads to the next.

  3. Mark the assumptions

Put a dot on any arrow that relies on something outside your control, number it and list it beside the map with any evidence you have.

Questions about this template

What does the ceiling of accountability line mean?

It marks where your charity's direct responsibility ends. Outcomes below the line are ones your activities should deliver, while the long-term goal above it also depends on others.
