An opportunity solution tree connects a business outcome to customer needs, the ideas that might meet them and the tests that check those ideas. This example starts from a week-4 retention goal, branches into three opportunities written in customers' own words, and gives each of six solutions a quick assumption test.

How to use this template

  1. Start from one outcome

    Pick a measurable outcome the team can influence, such as retention for new teams. A vague goal like growth produces a tree too wide to work on.

  2. Fill opportunities from interviews

    Write opportunities as needs or pain points you have heard from customers, ideally in their words. An idea with no customer source belongs in the solutions row, or nowhere.

  3. Test the riskiest assumption

    For each solution, name the assumption most likely to be wrong and the cheapest test for it, such as a fake door. Small tests let you compare solutions before building any of them.

How do I add another solution under an opportunity?

Copy a solution card, connect it under the opportunity it addresses and add the cheapest assumption test you could run for it.

Do I need an account to use it?
