Shopify collection and menu structure template

A Shopify navigation plan connects what shoppers see in the menu to the collections and tags behind it. Planning both together avoids duplicate collections and menu links that show the wrong products. This example maps a clothing store's five menu items to mega-menu groups, then to each collection handle, its automated rule and its filters.

How to use this template

  1. Start from the menu

List the top-level items you want shoppers to see, then the groups beneath each one. Keep the top level short so it fits on a single line on a laptop screen without wrapping.

  2. Write a rule for every collection

Next to each link, note the collection handle and the condition that fills it, such as product type and tag. Automated rules keep collections up to date as you add new products.

  3. Agree tag conventions

Decide how tags are written and who adds them. Inconsistent tags such as "Women" and "womens" are a common reason products go missing from a collection without anyone noticing.
