Food recall flowchart template

When a food safety problem is found, the first hours decide how many people are put at risk. This example traces a batch of hummus with undeclared sesame back to its four supplier lots and forward to five customers with unit counts, decides between a withdrawal and a full recall, notifies the authorities, drafts the point-of-sale recall notice and lists the first-24-hour actions.

This is a planning example, not food-safety advice or a HACCP plan. Follow your local food-safety law and an approved HACCP plan.

How to use this template

  1. Identify the batch

Put the affected product, batch code, date mark and quantity in the centre, then list every supplier lot that went into it.

  2. Trace forward

List every customer who received the batch and how many units, so you know exactly where the product is.

  3. Decide and notify

If any product may have reached consumers, it is a recall. Tell the authorities straight away and agree the notice wording.
