Butterfly life cycle diagram template

A butterfly life cycle diagram shows children how one small egg becomes a butterfly. This example puts the four stages on a big loop with arrows, so it is clear the cycle starts again, and adds how long each stage lasts for painted ladies, four new words such as larva and pupa, a fun fact and a checklist for watching a butterfly kit at home or in class.

How to use this template

  1. Draw the four stages

Start with the egg at the top and go round: caterpillar, chrysalis, then butterfly. Let your child colour each circle.

  2. Add the times

Write how long each stage lasts. If you have a butterfly kit, swap in the real dates as they happen.

  3. Learn the words

Add the science words to sticky notes, then ask your child to point to the stage each word belongs to.
