Food chain and food web diagram template

A food chain diagram shows who eats whom, and a food web joins several chains together. This example draws a British woodland in four tiers: plants at the bottom, then plant eaters, meat eaters and top predators, with every arrow meaning is eaten by. It adds where the energy comes from, what decomposers do, one chain to read aloud and questions to talk about.

How to use this template

  1. Start with the plants

Put the producers on the bottom row. Every food chain starts with a plant that makes its own food from sunlight.

  2. Add who eats what

Place the animals in tiers and draw an arrow from each food to the animal that eats it.

  3. Ask what if

Cover one animal and ask your child what would happen to the others. That is the heart of a food web.

Questions about this template

What do the arrows on the food web mean?

Each arrow means is eaten by, so it points from the food to the animal that eats it. Add your own animals and draw new arrows the same way.
